President’s Message

We are back from a fantastic conference in Fort Lauderdale. I think everyone enjoyed this chance to meet with friends and colleagues, and network with many other moving professionals and suppliers. If you didn’t go, you really missed a wonderful experience. Thank you to everyone who joined us this year, and special thanks to our sponsors and exhibitors, who help make it all happen. The AMSA staff also did an outstanding job this year.

As I said in my remarks, professionalism will help pave the way to success for our industry, and show why our services are the best option for consumers. Former professional football star Merril Hoge inspired everyone with his keynote message of “Find a Way” to achieve your goals. The 40Below group once again had a huge turnout for their events, culminating with the presentation of bicycles they assembled for underprivileged children at our awards ceremony. And the Live Auction was a resounding success, with AMSA members generously bidding to support both the MSI and Move For Hunger.

Look for a full conference recap in the next issues of AMSA Today and Direction magazine. We hope to see you next year for AMSA’s incredible 100th annual conference in Houston, Texas!

97% of Truckers Comply with ELD Just Prior to Mandate
The April 1 deadline that brought full enforcement of the federal electronic logging device mandate pushed the trucking industry into compliance. “An ongoing poll conducted by CarrierLists indicated that ELD compliance rates during the final week before the deadline spiked six points,” reports Trucker.com. Read more about the 97 percent compliance rate and the last-minute scramblers who met the deadline.

Survey: Drivers Are Earning More; Enjoying Incentives
New research from the American Trucking Associations finds big-rig drivers are making more money than they did five years ago. The median salary for a truckload driver working a national, irregular route was over $53,000. BulkTransporter.com says that’s a 15 percent increase from ATA’s last survey in 2013. A private fleet driver saw pay rise to more than $86,000, or 18 percent since the previous research. The post also said fleets are offering signing bonuses and benefits packages to attract and keep drivers.

The State With the Most Outbound Moves
People aren’t moving as frequently as they have been, still “outbound moves from California via three giant moving companies in 2017 outpaced arrivals by the widest gap in 11 years.” That’s according to a post on MercuryNews.com, which explains the numbers don’t mean there’s a growing exodus from the Golden State. “Last year’s departures—as well as arrivals—are roughly 40 percent below the 2006 levels,” says reporter Jonathan Lansner.

FMCSA Allows Electronic Records & Signatures
The FMCSA has issued a final rule, effective June 15, that will allow the use of electronic records and signatures. Examples of documents now permitted to be transmitted and/or maintained include bills of lading, the Ready to Move brochure, the Rights and Responsibilities booklet, vehicle maintenance records, and more. For more information, click here. By allowing the consumer disclosure documents to be transmitted electronically, the FMCSA rule now eliminates the need for HHG operators to receive/maintain a physical receipt of waivers from the shipper. Additionally, the agency clarifies that shippers filing an HHG claim must do so in writing or electronically, rather than orally. AMSA had submitted comments, along with Atlas Van Lines and other trade groups, in support of the rule change.

House Bill Aims to Bend 14-Hour Clock for Truck Drivers
AMSA is currently evaluating Congressman Babin’s proposal which would allow truck drivers a daily break of up to three consecutive hours that would not eat into their 14-hour on-duty allotment. At this time, we have concerns that this bill does not offer the help that our drivers need. We require flexibility at the end of a shift due to consumer delays, not an extended off-duty pause in the middle of the day. Furthermore, our initial assessments indicate this bill will have difficulties passing the House as written. AMSA will continue to monitor the legislation and provide updates to the proposal.

AMSA-Backed Legislation Scheduled for Vote
AMSA has worked with members of the House and Senate to introduce the “Moving Americans Privacy Protection Act,” a bill that would prohibit U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) from releasing personally identifiable information (PII) of our international move customers to third party entities for marketing purposes. Today the House will consider the bill following passage by the House Ways and Means Committee, by a unanimous vote, on April 11.

House GOP Wants to Set a Vote to Make Individual Tax Cuts Permanent
The primary goal of this “phase two” tax cuts package is making the individual income tax cuts permanent – an extremely pricey proposition. Outlook for this bill passing both chambers of Congress appear dim at the current time. AMSA, though, continues to advocate for restoring the Moving Expense Deduction and income exclusion for individuals within this or any tax package moving.

Trump Infrastructure Policy Adviser to Leave White House
Back in October, AMSA President and CEO Scott Michael and Board Chair J.D. Morrissettee met with President’s Trump infrastructure policy advisor D.J. Gribbin and other administration officials at the White House to discuss our nation’s infrastructure policies. Since the administration’s subsequent infrastructure initiative has apparently run into a wall on Capitol Hill, the White House has announced Gribbin’s departure.
