Hotel Poacher & Pirate Alert

The Marriott Marquis Houston is the only authorized hotel providing guest room accommodations for AMSA’s 100th Annual Education Conference & Expo in Houston, Texas.

If you receive solicitations from any other vendors identifying themselves as the official AMSA housing representative or partner, they are NOT authorized to sell guest rooms for the event

How Hotel Poaching Scams Work

Most poaching agencies do not have a contract with any hotels for room blocks. They will contact a housing wholesaler, such as Expedia, Priceline, etc. to see if rooms are available that they can mark up and sell to unsuspecting guests.

Hotel poachers will claim to be an AMSA “partner” or the “official housing company” and will sometimes ask that your room be paid in full, up front. Room poachers often don’t deliver on promises to attendees. When guests arrive, the reservations are often non-existent or the hotels are far from the event location. Sometimes, hefty cancellation charges are billed to your credit card. Poachers often represent themselves as being affiliated with the expo or conference by illegally using trademarked logos.

Only AMSA registered attendees can book within the conference’s room block.

How to Avoid Hotel Poachers

Years before every AMSA’s 100th Annual Education Conference & Expo in, we negotiate contracts with hotels that include clauses to protect our attendees should any issues arise with reservations.

  • AMSA is the only authorized resource that provides attendees hotel reservation information for conference hotels
  • Trust your instincts and the old adage: If it sounds too good to be true then it probably is
  • If you receive an unsolicited call or email from any company that is not AMSA, please obtain the name of the company and contact us immediately

Please note: If a room is booked outside of the official AMSA conference room block, we are unable to help. If you are unsure whether something is legitimate, please contact Racquel Codling at (703) 706-4965 before providing your personal, company or credit card information.
