About AMSA

The American Moving & Storage Association (AMSA), a nonprofit trade group, is the only national association for the full-service, professional moving and storage industry. We represent more than 4,000 companies across the United States and internationally, including suppliers and affiliates. Our members include interstate, local and international moving and storage companies and state moving associations.

Based in the Washington, D.C., area, our mission is to represent the interests of our members and to educate and help the customers they serve. We work to ensure that consumers understand the value of professional moving services as well as the risks of not properly vetting a mover in advance.

In 2009, AMSA created the ProMover certification program to give consumers a quick and simple way to identify the best interstate moving companies. We have also established state-level ProMover programs in California, Florida and Michigan.

We also administer the Certified Moving Professional (CMC) and Certified Office and Industrial Consultant (COIC) certification programs for individuals. Look for moving company professionals who carry these professional credentials. AMSA also has an educational and charitable foundation, the Moving & Storage Institute.

Our Goals

  • To be the leading certifier of U.S. professional movers, preparing the workforce of today and the future
  • To foster effective government regulations, legislation and policies which allow members to provide quality services at fair prices
  • To provide strong and effective advocacy for the industry and the consumer utilizing moving and storage services
  • To promote industry knowledge and professional development

Our History

AMSA is the result of a merger of the three predecessors — the American Movers Conference (AMC), the Household Goods Carriers' Bureau (HGCB), and the National Moving & Storage Association (NMSA) — each with its own distinguished history. Our earliest predecessor was the National Furniture Warehousemen's Association, founded in 1920 in Michigan. This oldest trade association for movers in America later became headquartered in Chicago.
